How to write a hook for a founder video
The hook is not written; it is found. Somewhere in your three minutes is one sentence with a number, a name or a quote in it. Move it to the front.
Three hooks that work
The number: "Nine of the ten trials churned on day three." The quote: "She said: I would pay for this if it did one less thing." The admission: "I shipped the wrong feature for six weeks."
Three that do not
The promise ("how I 10x’d our growth"). The question to the viewer ("ever wondered why"). The wind-up ("so today I want to talk about"). Each one delays the specific, and the viewer leaves before it arrives.
Under eight words, no emoji
A hook is read in under a second. Eight plain words, the specific first. If it needs an emoji or a rocket, it is not a hook yet.
Let the cut find it
A good cut opens on the hook even when you said it last. The order you spoke in is not the order the viewer needs.
